A brief comment...
I don’t know what to say, what to think, or what to do.
That’s not entirely right. I do know the last two: what to think and what to do.
This world is utterly broken.
Seeing so many who claim to be Christians engaged in whataboutism on all sides breaks my heart.
It also reminds me that God tears down all barriers between people through the gospel.
It forces me to evaluate my own speech, my own heart, my own actions, particularly when it comes to the increasing blurring conversation between enforcing laws and injustice.
And so I think I know what I need to say…
If the events unfolding over the course of the last several weeks in the United States and around the world in countries like Venezuela, Ukraine, and Nigeria elicit heartache and pain, know that you’re not alone.
Also know that the Lord has not ceded his sovereignty to anyone.
That fact is the hardest truth for me to hold on to at the moment because it sure does feel like the enemy is winning in this moment.
He appears to be winning by twisting and perverting Old Testament concepts of boundaries and borders in the minds of 21st Century “believers.”
His influence feels like it waxes as power is corrupted into something to be wielded in the name of the “common good.”
His plans to deceive and destroy bear terrible and terrifying fruit as bad actors take up the call to “fight back” against liberal social movements and theology as for decades conservatives have shifted from demonizing policies to people.
But the Lord is not unaware.
Somehow all of things work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose.
Perhaps God is allowing this season to unfold as it is to sift his sheep from the goats.
I cannot say for certain but it certainly feels plausible.
In this moment, it is easy to react to what is happening rather than responding with grace and truth.
Let the redeemed of the Lord stand on these truths:
God is on the throne.
God will not be mocked.
The task of the Christian is two-fold: pray and ground every action and deed in love.
A day will come when God will judge the world according to his justice and his righteousness.
Said judgement will begin at the house of God and spread to the world.
No one will escape it.
May you strive to be found innocent in the eyes of the Lord because the alternative is Hell.
If you needed a reminder of God’s sovereignty, even over the chaos of the present, meditate on the following Psalm...
Psalm 2
CORONATION OF THE SON
1 Why do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
2 The kings of the earth take their stand,
and the rulers conspire together
against the Lord and his Anointed One:,
3 “Let’s tear off their chains
and throw their ropes off of us.”
4 The one enthroned in heaven laughs;
the Lord ridicules them.
5 Then he speaks to them in his anger
and terrifies them in his wrath:
6 “I have installed my king
on Zion, my holy mountain.”
7 I will declare the Lord’s decree.
He said to me, “You are my Son;
today I have become your Father.
8 Ask of me,
and I will make the nations your inheritance
and the ends of the earth your possession.
9 You will break them with an iron scepter;
you will shatter them like pottery.”
10 So now, kings, be wise;
receive instruction, you judges of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with reverential awe
and rejoice with trembling.
12 Pay homage to the Son or he will be angry
and you will perish in your rebellion,,
for his anger may ignite at any moment.
All who take refuge in him are happy.1

Amen. God is Sovereign. He will work all things out for good. My heart has surely been heavy, but I know that the Lord is with those suffering in Ukraine and Nigeria. He's with the people of Minnesota. He is our comfort and peace. In this world we will have trouble, but He has overcome the world. We're here to show people Jesus. If we walk by the Spirit and not after the flesh, then we'll know what to do.
